Borrowed from Andalusian Arabic الضَّبّة (aḍ-ḍábba, latch), from Arabic ال (al-, definite article) + ضَبّة (ḍabba, mounting on a door, literally she-lizard). Displaced Latin pessulus, which would have yielded *péssol.
