From Old High German bītan, from Proto-Germanic *bīdaną (“to wait, await”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰéydʰeti (“to trust”). Cognate with German beiten, English bide, Icelandic bíða, Danish bie, Gothic 𐌱𐌴𐌹𐌳𐌰𐌽 (beidan).
