Borrowed from Old Norse búask, reflexive of búa (“to prepare”); compare boun for a derivation from that verb's past participle and basken for a similar formation from an Old Norse reflexive.
Forms with -sch- are backspellings due to the analogy of words with fluctuation between /sk/ and /ʃ/.
