Borrowed from Ancient Greek κατηχίζω (katēkhízō) into Late Latin, a Hellenistic variant of κατηχέω (katēkhéō, I instruct orally; instruct in religion), from κατά (katá, down) + ἠχή (ēkhḗ, sound, noise).
