From the noun desmits (“group of ten”), from *desimtis by metathesis, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *déśimt with a suffix -(t)i-s marking collective number (“group of ten”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *déḱm̥t (“ten”). Cognates include Latgalian desmit and Lithuanian dešimt.
