French
Etymology
Contraction of de (“of/from”) + lequel (“which”).
Pronunciation
Pronoun
duquel m (feminine de laquelle, masculine plural desquels, feminine plural desquelles) (relative)
- of which, of whom, from which, from whom
- Voilà l'homme à côté duquel Marc s'asseyait.
- There is the man that Marc was sitting next to.
- (literally, “There is the man at the side of whom Marc was sitting.”)
Usage notes
- Duquel is used with compound prepositions ending in de, such as à côté de, près de, en faveur de (as above).
- Duquel can also replace the possessive dont (“whose”). This is overall rare, but it is necessary when the noun phrase is preceded by any preposition: l'homme avec la femme duquel j'ai parlé (“the man with whose wife I've spoken”).
