Probably borrowed from German Entropie, from Ancient Greek ἐντροπῐ́ᾱ (entropĭ́ā); literally "turning over" but taken in the sense of "transforming". A term proposed in 1850 by the German physicist R. J. Clausius by analogy with German Energie.
