Inherited from Vulgar Latin *excadescere, derived ultimately from Latin cadere (fall). Compare Portuguese esquecer.

Etymology

Perhaps from descaecer (id.) with a substitution of prefix.

Old Spanish had another escaecer which meant "to forget" and was cognate with the Asturian escaecer, as well as with the Portuguese esquecer, all meaning "to forget".
