Inherited from Vulgar Latin *excadescere, derived ultimately from Latin cadere (“fall”). Compare Portuguese esquecer.

Etymology
Perhaps from descaecer (“id.”) with a substitution of prefix.
Old Spanish had another escaecer which meant "to forget" and was cognate with the Asturian escaecer, as well as with the Portuguese esquecer, all meaning "to forget".
