From Flaps (lout, oaf, churl) + -ig, ultimately from flapp, imitative of the sound of clapping. Further meanings developed in the German Low German [Term?] and Central German dialects and vernaculars. Compare German Flappe (twisted mouth, hanging bottom lip).
