From Middle High German vlēhen (also vlēgen, vlēn, etc.) from the coalescence of Old High German flēhan, flēhōn, flehōn, and flēgōn, from Proto-West Germanic *flaihijan, *flaihōn, *flaigōn (“to flatter”).
