From Late Latin īnfīnītīvus (“unlimited, indefinite”), from Latin īnfīnītus (“unlimited, infinite”), from fīnītus (“finished”), perfect passive participle of fīniō (“I finish; limit; appoint”), from fīnis (“boundary, limit”), possibly from either *fignis, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeygʷ- (“to stick, set up”), or from *fidnis, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeyd- (“to split”).
