Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /jɑxt/
  • Audio:(file)
  • Hyphenation: jacht
  • Rhymes: -ɑxt

Etymology 1

From Middle Dutch jacht, jaecht, jaget, from Old Dutch *jagot, from Proto-West Germanic *jagōþu (hunt, hunting). Equivalent to jagen (to hunt) + -t (verbal noun). Cognate with German Jagd. The form jaecht is due to contraction and jacht to subsequent pre-cluster shortening. (Compare maagd, in which an analogous development was probably hindered by the potential homophone macht.)

Noun

jacht f (uncountable)

  1. hunt, hunting
  2. chase, pursuit

Descendants
  • Afrikaans: jag
  • Negerhollands: jaak, jak

Etymology 2

Probably a shortening of jachtschip, from jacht (hunt) or jachten (to hurry) + schip (ship). Ultimately from etymology 1.

Noun

jacht n (plural jachten, diminutive jachtje n)

  1. yacht (fast, light and now often luxurious (sailing) boat) [from early 16th c.]
    Synonyms: jachtschip, jachtschuit

Ze vaarden op hun jacht naar het Caribisch gebied. They sailed to the Caribbean on their yacht.

Usage notes
  • Previously jacht could also take the feminine gender in this meaning, after etymology 1; this usage is obsolete.
