Etymology
From Middle High German leichen (“to jump, rise, mate, spawn”). Despite the late attestation (14th c.) plausibly inherited from Proto-West Germanic *laikan (“to jump, play”). Alternatively denominal from Middle High German leich. Equivalent to Laich + -en.
