From Proto-Philippine *lutuq (“ripe”). Possibly associated with color of fruits when ripe. Thus, related with the first etymology with the sense "ready to be eaten". Compare Hiligaynon luto (“ripe, also cooked”), and Maranao loto' (“ripe, also cooked”).
