Derived from Etymology 1. Originally, this word was probably used for wide, short men's pants, knotted below the knees, in older Polish (from the 16th c.) called marynały (similar to them was also the lower part of women's underwear, knotted below the knees), a characteristic element of clothing of sailors in the past.
