From Middle Dutch netel (malicious, angry), from Old Dutch *nitul, from Proto-West Germanic *hnitul, from Proto-Germanic *hnitulaz + -ig. Often superficially interpreted as deriving from netel (nettle), which may however be completely unrelated etymologically.
