From *dalom (needle) + pa- -an. Fossilized word *dalom possibly came from Malay jarum, ultimately from Proto-Austronesian *zaʀum (needle) (cf. karayom, Cebuano dagom and Javanese dom). Cognate to Kapampangan paraluman, Maranao padoman, Maguindanao paduman, Tausug padduman, and Indonesian pedoman (compass).
