Etymology
Ultimately from Ancient Greek κῦμα (kûma, “sprout of a plant”), likely through Latin cȳma (“sprout of cabbage”). Compare Aromanian ciumã (“tuft, flock of wool”). Traditionally connected to Latin coma (“hair of the head”), compare Italian chioma. The usage of the term for various diseases, for which compare also qimëz, is shared with Aromanian ciumã, giumcã (“swelling, tumor”), Romanian ciumă (“plague”). See the latter for other Balkan cognates.
