Etymology

Both SAOL (1889, 1923) and Östergren list redgarn as a compound reda + garn, but Nationalencyklopedin says unknown origin. Redgarnsstrumpor are mentioned in the 16th century and were popular in the 18th century.

Noun

redgarn n

  1. worsted; a kind of yarn, mainly used for embroideries (worsted actually translates to kamgarn, German Kammgarn, and redgarn is described as a rugged, glossy kind of kamgarn)
