Etymology

From Middle Dutch richten, from Old Dutch rihten, from Proto-West Germanic *rihtijan, from Proto-Germanic *rihtijaną (to right), derived from *rehtaz (right, straight). Equivalent to recht (right, straight) + -en (deadjectival) and shows the effect of historical i-mutation.
