From Middle High German siechen, from siohhēn, from Proto-West Germanic *seukēn. Cognate with Low German süüken, seeken and Swedish sjukna.

siechen (weak, third-person singular present siecht, past tense siechte, past participle gesiecht, auxiliary haben)
- (chiefly literary) to be very ill, bedridden for a long time, moribund
- (obsolete) to be ill (in general)

- Now mostly used with vor sich hin or replaced by the derivative dahinsiechen.
