By surface analysis, sonnu (sleep, noun) + -ari (verb-forming suffix). Likely derived from Vulgar Latin *somnāre. Cognate with Neapolitan sonnare. Compare Occitan and Catalan somiar, Portuguese sonhar, Italian sognare and Spanish soñar ~ ensoñar. Doublet of nzunnari.
