From Middle Low German telt, from Proto-Germanic *teldą. Cognate with German Zelt and Old Norse tjald (“tent”) (whence Norwegian Bokmål tjeld, Swedish tjäll, and Danish tjæld). English tilt and Swedish tält were also borrowed from Low German.
