From Middle Dutch tocht or tucht, from Old Dutch *tuht, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *tuhtiz, cognate to German Zucht. Equivalent to tijgen (“to go, pull”) + -t (“verbal noun”). Doublet of tucht.
