From Middle High German trennen, from Old High German trennen, from Proto-West Germanic *trannijan, from Proto-Germanic *trannijaną. Cognate with German Low German trennen, Dutch tornen (archaic tarnen, from Middle Dutch ternen, metathesis of older trennen).
