Finnish

Etymology

Coined by Finnish politician, historian and professor Yrjö Sakari Yrjö-Koskinen. May be based on vauras (despite the semantic difference) or be an ex nihilo coinage; in either case, suffixed with + -io.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈʋɑu̯rio/, [ˈʋɑ̝u̯rio̞]
  • Rhymes: -ɑurio
  • Syllabification(key): vau‧ri‧o
  • Hyphenation(key): vau‧rio

Noun

vaurio

  1. damage (instance of something not being intact)

Usage notes

Unlike English damage and Finnish vahinko, vaurio is used countably to refer to a single instance of damage. As a result, it is used chiefly of actual, physical damage. Uncountable, collective use is expressed with the plural number.
