Geiranger mehatxupean bizi da Åkerneset menditik lur-jauziak eroriko ote zaizkion fiordoari. Horrelako kolapso batek tsunami bat eragin lezake, Geiranger suntsituko lukeena.
Antzinako eskandinavieraz esaten zitzaion Geirangr. -angr atzizkia ('fiord') elementu arrunta da Norvegiako toki izenetan (adibidez Hardanger eta Varanger).[4] Lehen elementua izan zitekeen geiri ('lur zatia; mendi magaleko soroa') hitzaren antzinako eskandinavierazko genitibo plurala, zeina senidetuta dagoen gore ingelesarekin ('arpoi itxurako lur zatia'). Horrek aipamena egingo liekete fiordoaren ingurko mendi magal erripatsuetan dauden baserriei eta soroei. (Ikus Knivsflå eta Skageflå.)
Geiranger da Norvegiako hirugarren kruzero-portua, eta 140-180 ontzi bitartean jasotzen ditu turismo sasoiak dirauen lau hilabeteetan. 2012an 300.000 lagunek bisitatu zuten Geiranger uda sasoian. Geirangerko portuak kruzero-terminal bat dauka, itsas pasealeku bat, eta 3-4 ainguraleku, ontzien neurriaren arabera. 2013an eraikia, itsas pasealekua da hiru zatiko kai artikulatua. 236 m luze da eta 4,5 m zabal, 10 pontoitan, eta balio du ontzi bakarretik ordu betean jaisten diren 4.000 bidaiari hartzeko.[5]
Uda bakoitzean ehunka mila lagun pasatzen dira herrixkan zehar, eta, bistan da, turismoa da negozio nagusia herrian modu iraunkorrean bizi diren 250 lagunentzat. Geirangerren bost hotel daude eta hamar kanpin. Turismo-sasoia luzatzen da maiatzetik irail hasiera bitartean. Geirangerretik abiatzen dira Knivsflå eta Skageflå etxabere historikoetara joateko bisitak.
Urtero ekainean “Geiranger: fiordotik gailurrera” lasterketa egiten da. Proba 1994an hasi zen, eta honako lehiaketak osatzen dute: Geiranger maratoi erdia, Dalsnibba bizikleta-lasterketa, Geiranger ibilaldia eta Dalsnibba minitoia. Lasterketa guztiak itsas-mailan abiatzen dira, Geirangerfjord-en, eta guztiak (minitoia izan ezik) amaitzen dira Dalsnibba mendiaren gailurrean, 1.497 metrora, Djupvatnet lakuaren ondoan. Garai horretan gailurrak elurtuta egoten direnez, lasterketari ere deitzen zaio “Udatik negura”.
Bølgen (The Wave, Olatua) filmak, zeina 2015eko abuztuan estreinatu baitzen, hondamendi-film bat da, Norvegian egina, eta Geiranger herrixkan gertatzen dena. Berorren arabera, halako batean Åkerneset lur-jauzi ikaragarria gertatzen da, eragiten duena tsunami ikaragarri bat, herrixka suntsituko duena.[6] Filmak oso kritika onak jaso zituen, bai Norvegian eta baita nazioartean ere.[7]
