La Jamaïque est proclamée espagnole en 1494 quand Christophe Colomb arrive sur l'île. L'Espagne commença à occuper l'île à partir de 1509, la nommant Santiago. Le deuxième gouverneur, Francisco de Garay, établit sa capitale à Villa de la Vega, aujourd'hui connue comme Spanish Town.
