A fortaleza do Castro é un forte ergueito no alto do monte do Castro, na cidade de Vigo. A fortaleza actual data do século XVII, e formaba parte, xunto co Castelo de San Sebastián e as desaparecidas murallas da cidade, dunha rede estratéxica de fortificacións para a defensa da cidade.

A fortaleza do Castro estaba formada por tres recintos amurallados. Na actualidade só se conserva o primeiro recinto e parte do segundo; o terceiro, que sería a muralla da cidade, desapareceu na súa totalidade. O primeiro recinto é a fortaleza que coroa o cumio do Castro.
O proxecto de fortificar Vigo remóntanse ao século XVI, por mor dos frecuentes ataques que sufría a cidade, especialmente por parte dos ingleses. Pero non foi até 1665, en plena guerra con Portugal, cando se iniciaron os traballos de fortificación. É, pois, da mesma época que a fortaleza de San Lourenzo, situada en Goián, na beira do Miño.
A muralla construída é irregular por mor á orografía aberta por varias portas e defendida por tres baluartes. Tras o asedio de 1665, o capitán xeneral de Galicia ordena completar as obras, e foi logo, en 1666 cando o coronel e enxeñeiro Fernando de Gourannanbergue e mailo mestre de campo Diego Arias Taboada elaboran un intenso plan de fortificación e unión das fortalezas do Castro e de San Sebastián. A xulgar polos escritos da época a cidade nunca quedou ben defendida, pois a fortaleza se encontraba relativamente lonxe do mar e non podía deter os desembarcos. Ademais era doado acadar o cumio sen que o inimigo estivese descuberto. Logo de tres anos rematou a guerra con Portugal e as murallas perderon a súa importancia.
Despois de varios intentos de as mellorar, Vigo sofre a sonada batalla de Rande (23-24 de outubro de 1702) en plena guerra de sucesión, onde os invasores desembarcaron e saquearon novamente a vila. Despois disto houbo varios intentos inútiles de fortificación da vila.
En 1719 sufre o ataque dos ingleses.[1][2]
En 1809, a fortaleza do Castro volve ser protagonista debido á invasión dos franceses do exército de Napoleón Bonaparte, onde o 28 de marzo, a fortaleza é reconquistada polos vigueses tras unha dura e heroica batalla, trala cal os franceses se renden. A vila dende entón pasa a ter o título de "Fiel, Leal e Valorosa".
A fortaleza ten forma poligonal e está construída en fábrica de perpiaño de granito. Hoxe en día atópase aberta ao público, integrada no parque do Castro e completamente axardinada tanto exterior coma interiormente. Dentro atopamos unha ruta botánica con especies exóticas de interese, varias esculturas, un cruceiro, e na parte alta o miradoiro á ría e un xardín formal coa fonte e a escultura en honra ao “Empuxe Vigués" de 1969, obra de Camilo Nogueira Martínez.
A fortaleza atópase baixo a protección de Declaración xenérica do Decreto do 22 de abril de 1949, e a Lei 16/1985 sobre o Patrimonio Histórico Español.
A finais de 2013 por orde do Concello de Vigo iníciase o derrubamento do edificio en pedra ameado que fora a localización do restaurante de referencia vigués El Castillo. Co derrubamento descubrirase parte do paramento da muralla agochado parte do século XX.[3]
