Vagharshapat (bahasa Armenia: Վաղարշապատ) adalah kota terbesar keempat di Armenia, sekaligus merupakan daerah administratif dengan populasi terbesar di Provinsi Armavir, yang terletak 18 km (11 mi) sebelah barat Yerevan, dan 10 km (6 mi) sebelah utara perbatasan Turki-Armenia. Kota ini umumnya dikenal dengan nama Ecmiadzin (dieja pula sebagai Ejmiatsin atau Etchmiadzin, Էջմիածին), yang merupakan nama resmi kota antara 1945—1995.[2] Nama tersebut masih dipergunakan sehari-hari dan hadir pula dalam beberapa dokumen resmi, sebagai bentuk dari penamaan ganda.[3]
Katedral Etchmiadzin dan Tahta Ibu Suci Etcmiadzin, pusat Gereja Apostolik Armenia terletak di kota ini. Oleh karenanya, dalam beberapa sumber disebut sebagai "kota suci",[4][5] dan di Armenia sendiri disebut sebagai "ibu kota rohani" (հոգևոր մայրաքաղաք).[6] Vagharshapat pernah menjadi salah satu kota utama sekaligus ibu kota bersejarah dari masa Kerajaan Armenia.[7] Mengalami kemunduran hingga menjadi kota kecil pada awal abad ke-20, kota ini mengalami ekspansi secara masif pada masa Uni Societ, secara efektif menjadi zona penyangga bagi Yerevan.[8][9]
Menurut Movses Khorenatsi, wilayah Vagharshapat dahulu dikenal dengan nama Artimed (Արտիմէդ), yang terinspirasi dari salah satu dewi Yunani, Artemis. Artimed kemudian diubah namanya menjadi Avan Vardgesi (Աւան Վարդգէսի, "Kota Vardges") atau Vardgesavan (Վարդգէսաւան) oleh Pangeran Vardges Manouk yang membangun ulang sebuah permukiman dekat tepian Sungai Kasagh, pada masa pemerintahan Orontes I Sakavakyats dari Dinasti Orontid (321 SM–428 M). Movses Khorenatsi menambahkan bahwa Vardges nantinya dibangun ulang dengan pagar di sekelilingnya oleh Raja Vagharsh I dan lantas dikenal dengan nama Norakaghak (Նորաքաղաք) alias "Kota Baru") dan akhirnya Vagharshapat.
Dalam buku pertamanya, Wars of Justinian, seorang sejarawan Bizantium menyebut bahwa kota ini bernama Valashabad, yang dinamai berdasarkan Raja Vologases I. Nama tersebut berevolusi karena terjadinya pergeseran konsonan tengah l menjadi gh, yang merupakan fenomena umum dalam bahasa Armenia.
Ada pun nama lain dari kota ini, Ecmiadzin (Ejmiatsin atau Etchmiadzin) secara harafiah bermakna "tempat turunnya Sang Putra Tunggal",[10] dan dinamai demikian berdasarkan klaim bahwa Santo Gregorius sang Pencerah memiliki penglihatan bahwa Yesus (selaku putra atau anak tunggal Allah) turun ke lokasi Kota Vagharshapat dan memukulkan palunya ke tanah sebagai pertanda bahwa Santo Gregorius harus mendirikan gereja di sana.[11][12]
Vagharshapat merupakan anggota Organisasi Kota Warisan Dunia (Organization of World Heritage Cities, disingkat OWHC)[13] sejak tahun 2007.[14]
