1951 m. šiose vietovėse radus aukso, greitai išdygo palapinių miestelis, kuriame apsigyveno aukso ieškotojai. 1863 m. suteiktos miesto teisės, o nuo 1891 m. oficialiai vadinamas Bendigu.
Geležinkelis čia buvo nutiestas iki 1862 m. Tai paskatino spartų miestelio augimą. Čia buvo vystoma miltų, vilnos, malūnų, karjerų, liejyklų, eukalipto aliejaus pramonė, maisto gamybos pramonė, būta lentpjūvių. Dėl spartaus gyventojų skaičiaus augimo trūko vandens, todėl pastatytas naujas akvedukas, kuriuo tiektas Kolibano upės vanduo. Bendigo mieste architektas Viljamas Čarlzas Volandas suprojektavo daugiau nei 80 pastatų, įskaitant Aleksandros fontaną su granito delfinais, vienaragiais, nimfomis ir alegorinėmis figūromis.
