Fabula (latīņu: fabula — ‘vēstījums’, ‘stāsts’) ir sižeta atklāšanas līdzeklis, kas palīdz noskaidrot notikumu secību un saprast mērķus, kādi bijuši rakstniekam un ir neaizvietojams prozas literatūras paņēmiens. Tā bija viena no vecākajām domāšanas formām un viens no senākajiem vārda mākslas žanriem.[1] Fabulā visbiežāk tēlots kāds dzīvnieks, kas darbojas cilvēkam pierastā vidē. Bieži vien fabulas nobeigumā dota pamācība jeb morāle.
Fabulām ir divas nozīmes:
Fabulas dzimtene bija Senā Grieķija 8.—6. gs. p.m.ē. Grieķijā fabula ap 4. gs. p.m.ē kļuva par mācību literatūru. Vēlāk arī Francijā un Krievijā fabulas izmantoja kā līdzekli bērnu audzināšanā. Arī Latvijā 18. gs. beigās mācību grāmatās parādās Vecā Stendera pasakas, kuru pamatā ir Ēzopa un Lafontēna fabulas. Dažas fabulas pilnīgi folklorizējušās un kā tautas pasakas vēlāk tika iekļautas Anša Lerha-Puškaita un Pētera Šmita krājumos.[2]
