ഇന്ത്യൻ പോലീസ് സർവീസ് (ഐ.പി.എസ്.) അഖിലേന്ത്യാ സിവിൽ സർവീസുകളിൽപ്പെട്ട ഒരു സിവിൽ സർവീസാണ്. ദേശീയ തലത്തിൽ സിവിൽ സർവീസ് പരീക്ഷ നടത്തി തെരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെടുന്ന സമർത്ഥരായ ഉദ്യോഗാർത്ഥികൾക്ക് നൽകുന്ന ഒരു പദവിയാണ് ഇന്ത്യൻ പോലീസ് സർവീസ് (ഐ.പി.എസ്.). പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട മൂന്ന് അഖിലേന്ത്യ സേവന വിഭാഗത്തിൽപ്പെട്ട ഒന്നാണിത് (മറ്റുള്ളവ ഐ.എ.എസ്., ഐ.എഫ്.എസ്. എന്നിവ). ഈ പദവി ലഭിച്ച ഉദ്യോഗാർത്ഥികളെ സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളിലും കേന്ദ്രത്തിലുമുള്ള വിവിധ പോലീസ് വിഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ നേരിട്ട് അസിസ്റ്റന്റ് പോലീസ് സൂപ്രണ്ടുമാരായോ (ASP) അല്ലെങ്കിൽ തത്തുല്യമായ തസ്തികകളിലോ നിയമിക്കുന്നു. ഐ.പി.എസ്. ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥന്മാരെ നിയമിക്കുന്നതും പിരിച്ചുവിടുന്നതും കേന്ദ്ര ആഭ്യന്തര മന്ത്രാലയമാണ്. നിശ്ചിതകാലം സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ച യോഗ്യരായ സംസ്ഥാന പോലീസ് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥർക്ക് സംസ്ഥാന സർക്കാറുകളുടെ ശുപാർശപ്രകാരം ഐ.പി.എസ്.നൽകാറുണ്ട്. അഹ്‌മദാബാദിലെ സർദാർ വല്ലഭഭായ് പട്ടേൽ ദേശീയ പോലീസ് അക്കാദമിയിലാണ് ഐ.പി.സ്. ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥരുടെ പരിശീലനം നടക്കുന്നത്. കേന്ദ്ര സർക്കാരും സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളും ഇതിലെ ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥരെ നിയമിക്കുന്നു.
കേന്ദ്ര സായുധ പോലീസ് സേനകൾ (BSF, SSB, CRPF, CISF, ITBP), നാഷണൽ സെക്യൂരിറ്റി ഗാർഡ് (NSG), നാർക്കോട്ടിക് കൺട്രോൾ ബ്യൂറോ (NCB), നാഷണൽ ഡിസാസ്റ്റർ റെസ്‌പോൺസ് ഫോഴ്‌സ് (NDRF), ഇന്റലിജൻസ് ബ്യൂറോ (IB), റിസർച്ച് ആൻഡ് അനാലിസിസ് വിംഗ് (R&AW), സ്പെഷ്യൽ പ്രൊട്ടക്ഷൻ ഗ്രൂപ്പ് (SPG), നാഷണൽ ഇൻവെസ്റ്റിഗേഷൻ ഏജൻസി (NIA), സെൻട്രൽ ബ്യൂറോ ഓഫ് ഇൻവെസ്റ്റിഗേഷൻ (CBI) എന്നിവയുൾപ്പെടെ വിവിധ സംസ്ഥാന, കേന്ദ്ര പോലീസ് സേനകൾക്ക് ഇതിലെ അംഗങ്ങൾ നേതൃത്വം നൽകുന്നു.

Ranks and insignia
Though the standard uniform colour is khaki,[8] the ranks, posts and designations of IPS officers vary from state to state as law and order is a federalism in India. But generally the following pattern is observed.
IPS officers Ranks
IPS officers are appointed on the basis of either Civil Service Examination or promoted from the state police service cadre (state civil service officers). Vacancy in an IPS cadre are determined on the basis of vacancy on an superintendent of police rank. Consequently, there are two level of gradations for SP rank. These are level 11 and 12 as per the Seventh Pay Commission. Resultantly, IPS officers remain on the rank on SP till the 13th year after which they are eligible for being promoted as Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP). ASP rank is the junior most rank on an IPS state cadre. Consequently, fresh recruits to IPS are variously posted as Assistant Superintendent of Police in a supernumerary capacity (only for training purpose for two years and after that for 1 year) till they are formally placed as Superintendent of Police In-Charge of an area (when they get the pay of level 11 and level 12) and as district in charge (when they get the pay of level 12) (only in non-metropolitan districts).
