ഇന്തോ-യുറോപ്യൻ ഭാഷാഗോത്രത്തിലെ ഉത്തര ജർമാനിക് ഉപവിഭാഗത്തിൽ സ്ക്കാൻഡിനേവിയൻ ശാഖയിൽപ്പെടുന്ന ഭാഷയാണ് ഡാനിഷ്(Danish/ˈdeɪnɪʃ/ⓘdansk pronounced[ˈdanˀsɡ]ⓘ; dansk sprog, [ˈdanˀsɡˈsbʁɔwˀ]) അറുപത് ലക്ഷത്തോളം ആളുകൾ ഈ ഭാഷ സംസാരിക്കുന്നു.ഡെന്മാർക്കിലെ പ്രധാന ഭാഷയായ ഇത് വടക്കൻ ജർമനിയിലെ ജൂട്ട്ലാൻഡ് പ്രദേശത്തും സംസാരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.[3] ഈ ഭാഷ സംസാരിക്കുന്നവർ നോർവ്വെ, സ്വീഡൻ, സ്പെയിൻ, യു.എസ്.എ, കാനഡ, ബ്രസീൽ, അർജന്റീന എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലും താമസിക്കുന്നു. കുടിയേറ്റം കാരണം ഗ്രീൻലാന്റിലെ ഇരുപത് ശതമാനത്തോളം ആളുകൾ മാതൃഭാഷയായി ഡാനിഷ് സംസാരിക്കുന്നു. ഡാനിഷും നോർവിജിയനും സ്വീഡിഷും വളരെയേറെ സാമ്യമുള്ള ഭാഷകളാണ്. ഡാനിഷ്-നോർവിജിയൻ ലിപിയും ലത്തീൻ ലിപിയുമാണ് ഇപ്പോൾ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്. ഉത്തര ജർമ്മാനിക് ഭാഷയായ ഈ ഭാഷ സ്വീഡിഷ് ഭാഷയോടൊപ്പംസ്കാൻഡിനേവിയയിലെവൈക്കിംഗ് കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ സംസാരിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന പഴയ നോഴ്സ് ഭാഷയിൽ നിന്ന് ഉരുത്തിരിഞ്ഞതാണ്.[4][5]
