(b. 1423, Castagno, d. 1457, Firenze) Famous Persons: Giovanni Boccaccio c. 1450 Fresco transferred to wood, 250 x 154 cm Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence The picture shows one of the three Tuscan poets represented in the cycle. Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375), was an Italian poet and scholar, best remembered as the author of the earthy tales in the Decameron. With Petrarch he laid the foundations for the humanism of the Renaissance and raised vernacular literature to the level and status of the classics of antiquity.
