Noceboeffekt er når ei negativ forventing av eit fenomen fører til at det får ein meir negativ effekt enn det elles vilja ha gjort. Noceboeffekten førar til oppfatninga av at fenomenet vil ha eit negativt resultat bidreg aktivt til å påverka resultatet.[1][2]

Innan medisin kallar noceboeffekten ei sjukdomskjensle frambrakt av ein verknadslaus handsaming som pasienten tykkjer er skadeleg. Negative forventingar til ei faktisk handsaming kan òg motverka effekten. Noceboeffekten er det motsette av placeboeffekten, som er fenomenet at ein verknadslaus handsaming som pasienten trur på, og kan føra til at vedkomande følar seg friskare.
Omgrepet nocebo (frå latin nocebo, «Eg skal skada», frå noceo, «Eg skader») vart oppretta av Walter Kennedy i 1961 for å kalla det motsette av nytta av placebo (latin: placebo, «Eg skal gleda», frå placeo, «Eg gleder»); som ein substans som kan fremja ein fordelaktig, helsebringende, behageleg eller ønskeleg effekt.[3][4]
Ved testing av lækjemiddel eller medisinsk handsaming må ein ofte ta omsyn til noceboeffekt. Det kan verta for kontrollert noceboeffekter av ei handsaming ved å fortelja testpersonane om kva for bivirkninger det er forventa at eit medikament har, for deretter å gje halvparten av testpersonane ein liksommedisin utan (bi-)verknader. Viss kjensla av å verta dårleg av bivirkninger er like sterk i gruppa som fekk reell medisin som blant dei som fekk narremedisin, er sjukdomskjensla ein noceboeffekt. Ofte er det ikkje medisinar men andre påverknader som vert forklart som noceboeffekt. Særleg tanken om at ein er utsett for radioaktiv- eller elektromagnetisk stråling har i fleire studium vist å gje sjukdomskjensle. I nokon slike studium er del-overfølsomme plassert i nærleiken av apparat som vanlegvis avgir elektromagnetisme. Mange vil då angje at dei får hodepine og andre subjektive plagar sjølv om apparata ikkje er aktive (såkalt «uekte eksponering»).[5]
