Anohni vart fødd i Chichester i England.^[5] Familien hennar flytta til San Francisco Bay Area i 1981. I 1990 flytta ho til Manhattan i New York for å studere ved Experimental Theater Wing ved New York University, og i 1992 skipa ho kunstkollektivet Blacklips med Johanna Constantine.

Ho byrja den musikalske karrieren sin med eit ensemble som bestod av musikarar frå New York som Antony and the Johnsons. Det første albumet deira Antony and the Johnsons, kom ut i 2000 på David Tibet sitt Durtro. Det andre albumet deira, I Am a Bird Now (2005), vart ein stor suksess og ho vann ein Mercury Music Prize.

I 2016 vart Anohni den andre opne trans-personen som vart nominert Oscarprisen. Ho vart nominert for beste originale song, i lag med J. Ralph, for songen «Manta Ray» i filmen Racing Extinction.^[6] Det første debutalbumet hennar som soloartist, Hopelessness, kom ut i mai 2016 og fekk rosande omtale.
