Han var aktiv i visemiljøet i Cambridge i Massachusetts tidleg i 1960-åra og vart ven av Bob Dylan, og i lag deltok dei i D.A. Pennebaker-dokumentaren Dont Look Back. Den nedre delen av han er synleg på framsida av plateomslaget til Highway 61 Revisited. Neuwirth samla saman bandet som akkompagnerte Dylan i 1976 på Rolling Thunder Revue.^[1] Med Janis Joplin og diktaren Michael McClure var han med å skrive songen «Mercedes Benz». Han introduserte òg Kris Kristofferson for Janis Joplin.
