Nothofagus

Sørbøkslekta (Nothofagus) er ei planteslekt som omfattar 43 artar^[1] av tre og buskar som stammar frå den sørlege halvkula i sørlege Sør-Amerika (Chile, Argentina) og austlege og søraustlege Australia, New Zealand, Ny-Guinea og Ny-Caledonia. Arten er økologisk dominerande i mange tempererte skogar i desse regionane.^[2] Nokre arter skal vera naturaliserte i Tyskland og Storbritannia.^[3] Det finst rike fossilfunn av blad, fruktbeger og pollen, med fossil frå sistedelen av krittida av funne i Australia, New Zealand, Antarktis og Sør-Amerika.^[4]

Skildring

Trea kan vera eviggrøne eller lauvfellande med takkete eller heile blad. Frukta er ei lita, flatvoren eller trekanta nøtt som sit i klasar på ei til sju nøtter.

Formeiring

Mange individuelle tre i slekta er særs gamle. På eit tidspunkt trudde ein at nokre av populasjonane ikkje kunne formeira seg i noverande tilstandar anna enn ved rotskot (kloning), som restar av skogar frå ei kaldare tid. Ein har seinare funne at kjønna formeiring framleis er mogleg.^[5]

Taksonomi

Slekta Nothofagus blei fyrst formelt skildra i 1850 av Carl Ludwig Blume, som gav utskildringa i boka Museum botanicum Lugduno-Batavum, sive, Stirpium exoticarum novarum vel minus cognitarum ex vivis aut siccis brevis expositio et descriptio.^[6][7] Nothofagus tyder ‘falsk bøk’, som Blume nytta for å visa til at Nothofagus-artane var ulike bøkeslekta frå Den nordlege halvkula.^[8]
