Amstetten er distriktshovedstaden i Bezirk Amstetten i delstaten Niederösterreich i Østerrike, beliggende ved elva Ybbs i regionen Mostviertel.

Amstetten hadde pr. mai 2015 en befolkning på 23 182 innbyggere.[3]
Det finnes spor av menneskelig bosetning fra steinalderen og bronsealderen i området, og det første skriftlige belegget for en by i området gjelder Ulmerfeld i år 995. Stedet ligger ved det som fra romertiden har vært en viktig ferdselsåre, det vil si Limesstraße, senere kalt Reichsstraße og så Bundesstraße 1. Første gang Amstetten nevnes i kildene er i år 1111.[4]
I 1858 kom det jernbaneforbindelse. Amstetten fikk bystatus i 1897.[4]
Byen ble i nyere tid kjent for den såkalte Fritzl-saken.
