Intermarium, eller Intermarium-doktrinen (polsk: Międzymorze), var en plan utarbeidet av den polske lederen Józef Piłsudski som gikk ut på å etablere en føderasjon av sentral- og østeuropeiske stater under polsk og italiensk ledelse.[1] Føderasjonen skulle virke som en motbalanse mot Russland/Sovjetunionen i øst og Tyskland i vest. De statene som det var tenkt kunne utgjøre føderasjonen var de baltiske stater (Litauen, Latvia, Estland), Finland, Belarus, Ukraina, Ungarn, Romania, Jugoslavia, og Tsjekkoslovakia. Den foreslåtte føderasjonen ble ofte kalt det «tredje Europa».[trenger referanse]
Det polske navnet Międzymorze betyr «mellomhavs» eller «mellom havene», og er også det polske ordet for eid; dette ble oversatt til latin som Intermarium.[trenger referanse]
Føderasjonen skulle være tilnærmet likt Det polsk-litauiske samveldet, som strakk seg fra Svartehavet til Østersjøen. Intermarium sammenfalt med Piłsuskis andre geopolitiske mål - «promoteisme» - som gikk ut på å støtte opp om nasjonalistiske elementer i Det russiske keiserriket med mål om å oppløse det, og å få Russland til å avhende erobrede territorier.[trenger referanse]
Intermarium ble uansett sett på som en trussel for den nylig selvstendige staten Litauen, og sett på som en trussel for håpet om uavhengighet for mange ukrainere. Planen ble motarbeidet av Russland og de fleste europeiske stormakter med unntak av Frankrike.[trenger referanse]
Innen to tiår etter Piłsudskis plan feilet hadde alle land som var kandidater for et medlemskap i føderasjonen falt til Sovjetunionen eller Nazi-Tyskland, med unntak av Finland som motstod sovjetisk aggresjon, men dog hadde måtte avstå territorier, i vinterkrigen.[trenger referanse][2]
