Svartehavet er et hav mellom Europa og Lilleasia, eller mellom Russland, Ukraina, Romania, Bulgaria, Georgia og Tyrkia, ca. 436 400 km² stort (ikke inkludert Azovhavet).[1] Rominholdet er 547 000 km³. Lengden er 1 175 km og den største bredden er 610 km. Svartehavets dypeste sted er 2 212 m dypt (gjennomsnittlig dybde er mellom 1 240 m og 1 315 m)[2] Det er forbundet med Middelhavet gjennom Bosporosstredet, Marmarahavet og Dardanellene. Det er forbundet med Azovhavet gjennom Kertsjstredet. De viktigste havnebyer er Odessa og Sevastopol.

Flere store elver renner ut i Svartehavet, deriblant: Don, Dnepr, Dnestr og Donau. Rundt en tredjedel av vannet i Europas elver renner ut i Svartehavet.[4] På grunn av den store ferskvannstilførselen er deler av Svartehavet lite saltholdig.
