Nagrywał płyty również pod swoim nazwiskiem, lecz jako lider nie osiągnął większego sukcesu. Mimo to postrzegany jest jako jeden z najważniejszych i najbardziej kontrowersyjnych perkusistów w dziejach jazzu, głównie przez wzgląd na owocną współpracę z Ornette’em Colemanem na przełomie lat 50. i 60. XX wieku^[5].
