Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera (born 5 April 1955) is a Malawian theologian and politician. He became the 6th President of Malawi in June 2020.[2] He has been leader of the Malawi Congress Party since 2013. He was President of the Malawi Assemblies of God from 1989 to 14 May 2013.
Chakwera obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the University of Malawi in 1977. He studied theology and obtained an Honors BA from the University of Limpopo in South Africa, then a Masters from the University of South Africa in 1991. In 2000, he obtained a doctorate from Trinity International University, in the USA.
Chakwera ran for a second term as president in the 2025 Malawian general election on 21 September, but lost to his predecessor, Peter Mutharika, who won more than 60% of the vote.[3]
