聽覺 MMN(頭先提到嘅不匹配負向波)就係神經語言學(研究人腦點處理語言嘅領域)上常用嘅研究工具。神經語言學其中一個研究課題係研究人類嘅臊孲仔點樣學習語言,但係臊孲仔未識講嘢,所以唔似得大人噉曉話俾研究者知佢哋感知到嘅嘢,所以研究者就會運用 MMN 嚟做研究:例如一個研究者想知道 4 個月大嘅臊孲仔曉唔曉分辨 L 音同 R 音,佢可以一路監察住個臊孲仔嘅腦電活動,再一路俾佢聽一系列 R 音嘅字(rice),跟住喺某個時間點加插一個 L 音但除此之外完全一樣嘅字(lice),再睇吓呢個除咗係「L」字頭之外完全一樣嘅字會唔會造成 MMN-如果會,就表示 4 個月大嘅臊孲仔知道 R 同 L 係兩個唔同嘅音。除咗噉,神經語言學研究仲有用 MMN 研究人腦係咪曉自動噉探測文法錯誤或者語義上嘅改變(例如有研究指,讀一句開頭文法啱,後尾文法錯嘅句子會引致 MMN 出現)[18][19][20]。
