Die botterklapper (Strychnos madagascariensis) is 'n boom wat wydverspreid noord van die Vaalrivier voorkom. In die kuswoude van KwaZulu-Natal is die boom groter en slanker. Die boom staan ook bekend as die swartklapper. Dit is inheems in Suid-Afrika en kom voor in die provinsies KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Gauteng en Limpopo. Die boom is ook inheems in Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, die Kaprivistrook in Namibië, Kenia, Madagaskar, Malawi, Mosambiek, Somalië, Tanzanië, Zambië en Zimbabwe.

Blare en vrugte
Die blare is leeragtig, blink en donkergroen aan die bokant en lig groen aan die onderkant. Die blare is ook gewoonlik harig. Die vrugte is blouerig-groen wanneer hulle jonk is en word geel wanneer hulle volwasse is en is tot 8 cm in deursnee. Die vrugte het 'n dik dop, baie sade en is eetbaar.
