History

Perspective

Prior to the 1997 general election, the GRC was expanded to five members from the four it had when it was created for the 1991 general election.[1][2] For the 2001 general election, it was expanded again to six members to include the Cheng San and Jalan Kayu divisions from the former Cheng San GRC.[3][4]

During the 2006 general election, the GRC was considered a battleground as it faced its first electoral contest since its creation; a group of Generation X candidates from the Workers' Party (WP), led by Yaw Shin Leong, was contesting against the PAP.[5] Lee, the PAP anchor and then-Prime Minister, called the WP team a "suicide squad", with the WP team responding by claiming that they were not pushovers.[6] Eventually, the PAP won the GRC with 66.14% of the vote to the WP's 33.86%, slightly lower than the PAP's 66.6% of the national vote.[7]

During the 2011 general election, where there was a national swing against the PAP, the PAP team won with 69.33% of the vote against the Reform Party (RP), a higher percentage than all other GRCs as well as the national PAP vote of 60.14%.[8]

Before the 2015 general election, Inderjit Singh and Seng Han Thong retired from politics,[9][10] while Yeo Guat Kwang was redeployed to lead an ultimately defeated PAP team attempting to reclaim Aljunied GRC from the WP, which had gained it from the PAP in 2011. Koh Poh Koon and Darryl David replaced the latter two, while Gan Thiam Poh was redeployed from Pasir Ris–Punggol GRC.[11][12]

Before the 2020 general election, with the abolition-in-practice of six-member GRCs, the GRC was shrunk to five members after the Yio Chu Kang division was carved out to form the Single Member Constituency (SMC) of the same name. New faces Ng Ling Ling and Nadia Ahmad Samdin joined the team while Koh Poh Koon left the GRC to contest in Tampines GRC.[13] On election day, the PAP defeated the RP with 71.91% of the vote.[14][15]

During the 2025 general election, the GRC saw its first three-way contest between the incumbent PAP, the People's Power Party (PPP), and the Singapore United Party (SUP), which was participating in its first election.[16] The PAP team, led by Lee, now the Senior Minister led the team with Samdin and David remaining while Ng Ling Ling and Gan Thiam Poh retired from politics and was replaced by new face Jasmin Lau and ex-Aljunied GRC team leader Victor Lye.[17][18][19] Eventually, the PAP won the contest with almost 79% of the vote; the other two parties received around 10% each.[20] For failing to secure at least 12.5% of the vote, both PPP and SUP forfeited their election deposits.[20]
