The current Member of Parliament for the constituency is Gho Sze Kee from the People's Action Party (PAP). It was originally known as Mountbatten Constituency from 1957 until 1988, when it was renamed following the introduction of the Group Representation Constituency (GRC) system at the 1988 general election. The constituency was abolished at the 1997 general election but was re-established in the 2011 general election, and has been contested in every general election since. It is managed by the Marine Parade–Braddell Town Council (MPTC).

History

Perspective

The constituency was established in 1957 and was first contested at the 1959 general election, where it was won by Seow Peck Leng of the Singapore People's Alliance (SPA). It was one of the few constituencies not won by the People's Action Party (PAP) in that election, during which the PAP secured 43 out of 51 seats. The PAP gained control of the constituency in the 1963 general election through the election of Ng Yeow Chong. He served as the Member of Parliament until his retirement at the 1980 general election, after which he was succeeded by Eugene Yap Giau Cheng. Yap represented Mountbatten until the constituency was abolished in the 1991 general election.

At the 1988 general election, following the introduction of Group Representation Constituencies (GRCs), the seat was renamed Mountbatten Single Member Constituency in line with the new designation for constituencies with only one Member of Parliament.[1]

Since 2011

In 2011, Mountbatten was recreated as an SMC from the ward of the same name in Marine Parade GRC. Lim Biow Chuan, the incumbent MP for the ward, contested the SMC and won.[2]

In 2025, a polling district was moved from the constituency to Marine Parade–Braddell Heights Group Representation Constituency (GRC).[3] During the 2025 general election, it was announced that Lim would retire from politics, with Gho replacing him as the PAP candidate for the SMC.[4][5] She defeated independent Jeremy Tan with 63.82% of the vote, a negative swing of 10% from 2020.[6][7][8][a]
