Etymology 1

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-rjam (sharp) (STEDT, Schuessler, 2007). Initial *r- was re-interpreted as pre-initial and dropped; whereas doublets (OC *r(i)am, “whetstone”) and (OC *ɡ·rem, “sickle”) retain *r-.
