Usage notes
This term is often spelled in katakana, as インチ.
The kanji spelling derives from 寸 (sun), which is a unit of measurement approximately equivalent to the inch. This kanji was then affixed with the ⼝ radical, common to a number of such kanji, e.g. 听 (pondo) and 噸 (ton).
